What Is Meditation?
Meditation is a practice, a lot like exercise, that teaches us how to quiet the mind and manage our thoughts.
There are a lot of different reasons why people meditate, but three of the most popular include:
- Relaxation: Being able to cultivate a sense of calm that counteracts the high stress levels in our lives.
- Self-Healing: Being able to identify harmful, self-sabotaging thought patterns and consciously work on reversing them.
- Sleep: Learning to let go of the day and it's stresses in order to get a deeply restful night's sleep.
Meditation is one of the few self-care activities that can be done anywhere without the assistance of any tools or props. But despite its being very accessible, it can also be a challenge to keep up a regular practice.
That's why many people look for ways to deepen their practice with the use of healing crystals.
What Are Healing Crystals?
Healing crystals are beautiful rock formations that come in a number of different shapes, colours and sizes.
Natural healing crystals are formed deep within the earth's crust, over thousands of years. During their existence, they've experienced unfathomable transformation as they adapted to the evolving world around them, and as a result, it’s believed they possess energy and wisdom that can be harnessed.
Benefits of Meditating With Healing Crystals
The use of healing crystals dates back thousands of years, with philosophies borrowed from Hinduism and Buddhism.
There is currently no scientific evidence that the use of crystals help actually cure any disease, but it is believed that they can be a powerful tool to help enhance the self-care work that is already being done.
- Meditating with healing crystals allows you to focus on the qualities that stone represents.
- By focusing on the positive energy you seek to cultivate, you help clear negative energy from your mind & body.
As a result, meditating with healing crystals can both infuse more pleasure into the meditation process, as well as help deepen the results achieved.

How to Choose Your Stone
There are two approaches you can use for choosing your healing stone:
- By Intention
- By Intuition
The first is to identify what your meditation goals are. Examples of meditation goals could include cultivating more peace, love or positivity in your life.
Once you’ve identified what your desired outcomes are you can start researching the stones best suited for those goals.
- If your intention is peace, it would make sense to choose Amethyst
- If your intention is to manifest love, you could choose Rose Quartz
- If you are looking to cleanse toxic energy you could choose Quartz Crystal
The second approach to choosing your stone is to simply use your intuition. Your body and your mind knows what they need. If a particulate stone resonates with you, it most likely has the healing properties that you need most.
How To Use Crystals For Meditation
There are a number of different ways you can meditate with healing crystals. If you are new, we recommend starting off with the following simple technique:
Hold the stones in your hands. This technique helps you form a deep connection with the crystal and with your intention using the sense of touch, which can act as a powerful reminder for some people.
Create a Crystal Circle or Crystal Grid. Place crystals around you (one in front, one in back and one at each of the sides). This technique will help you develop a deep connection to the crystals without the sense of touch, which can be distracting for some people.
Once you are ready, you can incorporate your healing crystals into your meditation by following these steps:
Find a quiet spot.
Decide how long you will meditate, what your focus will be, and how you want to use your stones.
- Begin your meditation. During your practice, consider trying a creative visualization exercise by imagining the energy of your healing crystal entering your body and helping you cultivate the energy you seek.
- End your practice with a few cleaning breaths. Don't forget to thank yourself for taking the time to prioritize yourself and your self-care routine.
Once you feel you feel comfortable with these techniques, you can try more advanced meditation techniques. A popular one includes placing chakra stones directly on the parts of your body associated with the chakras.
Root Chakra: Place a Smoky Quartz stone near the base of your spine
Sacral Chakra: Place a Carnelian stone just below your navel
Solar Plexus Chakra: Place a Citrine stone just below your ribs
Heart Chakra: Place a Rose Quartz stone on your heart
Throat Chakra: Place a Lapis Lazuli stone on your throat
Third Eye Chakra: Place an Amethyst stone in the middle of your forehead
Crown Chakra: Place a Moonstone on the top of your headWe recommend trying this meditation practice for a minimum of 20 minutes. Once your practice comes to an end, you can remove the stones in reverse order.
Cleaning Your Healing Crystals
It's important to cleanse your stones on a regular basis as it will allow them to release any negative energy they have absorbed.
Start by cleaning them before you use them for the first time, then weekly if it's a crystal you wear (ie. healing crystal bracelets or mala necklaces), and monthly for stones you use during your practice.
You can cleanse them in a number of ways, but the simplest way is to give them a salt bath.
Combine a teaspoon of sea salt with a cup of filtered water. Fully immerse your stone, leaving it in the salt water solution for approximately one hour. After the hour is done, remove the stone, pat it dry, and store it until you are ready to use it again.
